Can ChatGPT or AI build my business website for free?
Yes. An AI assistant can draft your pages and code in minutes. A working business site also needs a domain, hosting, SSL, a form that reaches your inbox, mobile checks, accurate hours and someone to fix it. FreeWebGuy covers all of that: $0 to build, $15 a month after you approve it, with a person checking every first version.
An AI assistant can write a home page, a services page and a contact page for your business in the time it takes to read this paragraph, and it can write the code too. A draft is not a website, though. A business site has to live on a domain you own, stay online, show a padlock, send form submissions to a real inbox, work on a phone, state your hours correctly and have someone to call when it breaks. Who does each of those jobs depends on which kind of AI tool you pick. For every route and its price, see I need a website for my business: 5 ways to get one.
Can AI build a website?
Yes. Three kinds of tool do it, and they stop at different points:
- Chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini take a plain-text brief and return page copy, a page plan or HTML and CSS you can save as files. They do not register a domain, host anything or send form submissions. Everything after the draft is yours.
- AI site builders such as Durable and Hostinger’s builder generate a draft site inside their own editor and host it on a paid plan. Durable describes its sites as “ready to go online in 30 seconds”; its free tier is a private preview, and a site on your own domain takes the Launch plan at $25 a month, or $22 billed yearly (durable.com/pricing, October 14, 2026). Hostinger’s builder costs $143.52 for 48 months up front and renews at $10.99 a month (hostinger.com/website-builder, same date). You correct the draft and maintain the site.
- Done-for-you services with AI in the build. FreeWebGuy uses AI to build fast, and a person checks every first version before you see it. You review a private preview, ask for changes and approve it. $0 to build, $15 a month after you approve.
The first two save you money on the build and cost you the hours. The third costs $15 a month and saves the hours.
What does a working business website need that AI does not give you?
A working business website needs about 12 things beyond the draft. The table shows who does each one under each kind of tool.
| Job | Chat assistant | AI site builder | FreeWebGuy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write the page copy | The assistant drafts; you edit | The builder drafts; you edit | We write it from your brief; you review the preview |
| Check every fact: hours, prices, services, area | You | You | A person checks the first version; you confirm at approval |
| Design and layout | You, in whatever tool you publish with | The builder’s templates | We build it, phone first |
| Domain | You buy and connect it | Connect your own, or register one through the plan (Durable Launch includes one up to $20) | We connect the domain you own; a new one costs about $10 to $25 a year, paid to the registrar, in your name |
| Hosting | You choose and pay for a host | Included in the paid plan | Included in the $15 a month |
| SSL certificate (the padlock) | Depends on the host you pick | Included | Included |
| Contact form that emails you | You add a form service and test it | Included in paid plans | Included; it emails you |
| Phone-screen check | You, on your own phone | You | We build for phones first; you check the preview on yours |
| Page titles and descriptions | You ask the assistant, then paste them in | Usually generated; you review | SEO basics included: titles, descriptions and structure |
| Link from your Google Business Profile | You | You | You paste the address into your profile; we show you where |
| Fix it when it breaks | You | The builder’s support | The platform’s 24/7 chat support, and hello@freewebguy.com for design questions |
| Update hours, prices and staff later | You, in your files | You, in the editor | You, with the site’s AI builder |
Two of those rows decide most outcomes: the fact check and the maintenance. A draft that says you open at 8 when you open at 9 keeps sending people to a locked door until someone notices, and under the first two routes the someone is you.
How do I build a website myself with ChatGPT or Claude?
You can get a real site online with a chat assistant if you treat the assistant as a writer and do the publishing yourself. The steps, in the order that avoids rework:
- Write the brief first, by hand: business name, phone, email, address or service area, hours, each service in one sentence, prices or ranges if you publish them, and 2 or 3 sites you like. The assistant can only be as accurate as this list.
- Ask for a page plan: home, one page per main service, about, contact. Cut anything you will not maintain.
- Ask for the copy one page at a time, then read every line against your brief. Delete any service, guarantee, credential or price you did not supply. Assistants fill gaps with wording that sounds right, so a wrong price or a service you don’t offer reads like a fact.
- Ask for a single HTML file with the CSS inside it, mobile first, with your phone number as a tap-to-call link. One file is easier to host and harder to break.
- Buy a domain in your own name, about $12 to $25 a year for a .com (WebsiteSetup, November 2025), and keep the registrar login somewhere you will find it.
- Pick a host that serves static files and includes SSL, upload the file and point the domain at it. Expect an hour of settings the first time.
- Add a form. A static file cannot email you on its own, so you need a form service, a test message, and the sight of it arriving in your inbox.
- Open the site on your phone and on someone else’s. 73% of local searches start on a mobile device (BrightLocal, Consumer Search Behavior 2026), so the phone view is the one most customers see.
- Paste the address into your Google Business Profile, and make the hours and phone number on the site match the profile exactly. 56% of consumers often or always check that business information is consistent across sources (BrightLocal, April 2025).
- Put a reminder in your calendar to re-read the site every quarter, because nobody else will.
What should be on a small business website? lists what each page needs, and how long a small business website takes says how many weeks these steps usually take.
Are AI website builders mobile friendly?
Most AI site builders produce layouts that reflow for a phone screen, because that is how the templates are built. Check yours anyway: an AI draft can place a wide table, a long menu or a large image that reads well on a laptop and badly on a phone, and 73% of local searches start on a mobile device (BrightLocal, Consumer Search Behavior 2026). Open every page on your own phone before you share the address, and tap the phone number and the form button.
Are AI website builders good for SEO?
An AI-built site can rank as well as any other site, because Google judges the page, not the tool. Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary”; a page needs to be indexable and eligible for a snippet, and any structured data must match the visible text (Google Search Central, updated December 10, 2025).
What the tool cannot do for you is supply the facts Google matches on. Write the services you offer, the area you serve and your hours as plain text on the page, give each page a title and description that say what it is, and link the site from your Google Business Profile. A page that says “we offer a range of solutions” ranks for nothing; a page that says “drain cleaning in Gilbert, Monday to Saturday” has something to rank for.
How does FreeWebGuy use AI?
We use AI to build fast. A person checks every first version before you see it. That is the whole policy, and it is why the first version arrives within 48 hours of your brief rather than in 30 seconds: the minutes go to generation and the hours go to a person reading your brief, checking the draft against it and fixing what the draft got wrong.
You then do the last check yourself. You get a private preview link, read every page, tell us what to change, and approve it only when it matches your brief. Reasonable revisions before launch are included. Hosting is $15 a month and starts when you approve the site and set up your SMBcrm plan. How sites are built describes the process, FreeWebGuy vs Durable sets it beside an AI builder, and the FAQ answers “Is it built by AI?” directly.
When should I hand it off instead of doing it myself?
Do it yourself with an assistant when you enjoy the setup, you have the evenings, and a slow start costs you nothing. Hand it off when the site needs to be live and correct while you are out working, when nobody at your business will open an editor next year, or when the last three weekends have already gone to a half-finished draft. If you hand it to FreeWebGuy, the brief takes about 3 minutes, and what happens after you request a free website describes the 48 hours between your brief and your preview.
Questions
Can ChatGPT build me a website for free?
ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can draft the text and code for a website at no charge beyond any subscription you already pay. Putting that draft online costs money: a domain at about $12 to $25 a year (WebsiteSetup, November 2025) and hosting. The draft is also unchecked, so every hour, price and service in it needs your review.
Can an AI website builder help a small business?
Yes, if you will do the editing. Durable publishes a site on your own domain from $22 a month billed yearly (October 14, 2026), and the draft takes under a minute. The work that remains is yours: correcting the draft, adding your photos, testing the form and keeping hours and prices current.
Is an AI-built website good enough for a business?
It is good enough when a person has checked it. A first draft from any AI tool states things about your business that are not true, because it has only your brief to go on. FreeWebGuy's rule is one sentence: we use AI to build fast, and a person checks every first version before you see it. Then you review it yourself before approving.
Which AI can build a website for me?
Three kinds of tool do it. Chat assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude draft copy and code you then publish yourself. AI site builders such as Durable and Hostinger draft and host the site inside their own editor. Done-for-you services such as FreeWebGuy use AI in the build and hand you a finished, checked site. The last kind is the only one where the remaining jobs are not yours.
How long does it take to build a website with AI?
The draft takes seconds to minutes on any AI tool. The finished site takes as long as the checking, the photos, the domain, the form and the testing take, which for most owners is evenings over 1 to 2 weeks, the same as a DIY builder (Ueni, September 2026). FreeWebGuy sends a first version within 48 hours of your brief.
