Done-for-you websites
What is a done-for-you website?
A done-for-you website is one a provider designs, writes, builds and launches for you, instead of you building it on Wix or Squarespace. You describe your business and get a finished first version back. It is also called a DFY or do-it-for-me (DIFM) website. FreeWebGuy builds one for $0 and charges $15 a month for hosting once you approve it.
How does a done-for-you website work?
A done-for-you website project runs in four stages: you describe the business, the provider builds a first version, you ask for changes, and the provider launches it on hosting it manages. You supply the facts and the decisions. The design, writing, phone layout and technical setup sit with the provider.
Most providers begin with a form, a questionnaire or a call. Jottful and 99 Web Guys show you a free preview of the site before you pay. So does FreeWebGuy: the brief takes about 3 minutes, and the private preview arrives within 48 hours of your brief.
Providers differ most in three places: whether you pay before you see the site, how many rounds of changes you get, and who edits the site once it is live. Ask about all three before you sign up, because they decide what the next few years cost you in money and in time.
How much does a done-for-you website cost?
A done-for-you website can cost as little as $0 up front plus $15 a month for hosting, or as much as $15,000 for an agency project. Subscription services charge $24.99 to $399 a month, often with a setup fee, and a freelancer typically charges $2,000 to $7,600 for the build.

Prices in US dollars before tax, as each provider listed them for a US visitor. Freelancer and agency ranges come from WebsiteSetup and Clutch.
Each model suits a different owner. The $15 free-build plans fit a business that needs a handful of pages soon and is fine staying on the provider's hosting. UENI and Jottful charge more each month and add their own extras, such as the 30 days of done-for-you edits on UENI's Website Launch plan. B12 and Thryv sit higher, at $99 to $399 a month across their plans, and Thryv bundles business software with the site. A freelancer or agency is the better call when you need custom features, a large catalog or a build no template covers.
Done-for-you, DIY builder, freelancer or agency: which fits?
Pick a DIY builder if you like building and editing pages yourself. Hire a freelancer or agency if you need custom features and can pay a few thousand dollars up front. Choose a done-for-you plan if you want a finished site without doing the build and prefer a monthly fee to a project fee.
| Route | Build cost | Monthly | First year | Who builds it | First version | Your time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY website builder | $0 | $17 to $49 a month | $204 to $588 | You | When you finish building it | All of it: design, writing, setup and every update |
| AI website builder | $0 | $22 to $49 a month | $264 to $588 | You, with an AI first draft | A draft in under a minute; finishing it is up to you | Checking and rewriting the AI draft, then every update |
| Freelance web designer | $2,000 to $7,600 | $5 to $25 a month | $2,060 to $7,900 | A freelancer | 4 to 8 weeks | Meetings, your content and rounds of feedback |
| Web design agency | $5,000 to $15,000 | $5 to $25 a month | $5,060 to $15,300 | An agency team | 4 to 8 weeks or longer | Meetings, your content and rounds of approval |
| Done-for-you subscription | $0 to $79 | $24.99 to $199 a month | $379 to $2,388 | Their team | About a week (UENI says 7 days, Jottful one week) | A questionnaire, then reviewing the site |
| FreeWebGuy | $0 | $15 a month | $180 | We do | Within 48 hours of your brief | About 3 minutes for the brief, then reviewing the preview |

First-year figures add the build cost to twelve months of the monthly price. They leave out the domain and your own hours.
The DIY rows look cheap until you count your hours: on a builder you write every page, choose every photo and keep the site current yourself. Put a value on that time in the website cost calculator, or read the side-by-side comparisons for Wix, Squarespace, Durable and hiring a designer.
What does a done-for-you website include?
A done-for-you website usually includes the design, page copy written from your answers, a phone-friendly layout, basic SEO setup, a contact form, hosting with SSL and the domain connection. What varies is the number of pages, the rounds of changes before launch, and who makes edits after it goes live.
| What to check | FreeWebGuy | Hoot Host | WebsitesForFree.net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pages built | The pages your brief calls for. New pages after launch are quoted first. | Up to 5 pages | A one-page design |
| Changes before launch | Reasonable revisions until the preview matches your brief | One design option per site | Up to 3 revision rounds after the preview |
| Edits after launch | You edit with the AI builder, with the platform's 24/7 chat support | Some updates may be billed at an hourly rate | Minor updates handled by its team, per its site |
| Time to a first look | Within 48 hours of your brief | 2 to 3 weeks on average, up to 30 business days | A private preview within 72 hours |

Most done-for-you plans leave out the domain registration, payment-processing fees and larger changes after launch, so ask how each one is billed. FreeWebGuy lists everything that sits outside the $15 a month on the pricing page, including the domain at about $10 to $25 a year.
What is website as a service?
Website as a service is a pricing model where you pay a monthly fee for a website the provider builds, hosts and keeps running, instead of paying a one-off project fee and hosting the site yourself. Most done-for-you plans work this way. The trade-off is that the site usually lives on the provider's platform.
That trade-off shows up on the day you leave. Hoot Host says its sites cannot be moved to another host and its designs cannot be exported. WebsitesForFree.net says it hands over source files when you cancel. On FreeWebGuy, your domain, logo, photos and text stay yours, and the design is licensed to you while the plan is active. If you cancel, the site goes offline and we can help you gather your text and images.
The website as a service guide covers the pricing models in more depth, including what to ask about the second year.
Who is a done-for-you website for, and who should build their own?
A done-for-you website suits owners who would rather spend their time on the business than on a site builder: trades, appointment businesses, restaurants, shops and local professionals who need a few pages that look right and bring in calls. If you enjoy designing pages, build your own on Wix or Squarespace.

We quote first

Done-for-you website questions
Is a done-for-you website worth it for a small business?
It is when an hour in the business is worth more to you than an hour in a site builder. At $15 a month, FreeWebGuy's first year costs $180 plus a domain if you need one, close to the $204 of Wix Light billed yearly, so the real choice is whether you want to build and maintain every page yourself.
How fast can a done-for-you website be built?
FreeWebGuy sends a first version within 48 hours of your brief. Elsewhere, WebsitesForFree.net promises a preview within 72 hours, 99 Web Guys quotes 5 days, UENI 7 days and Jottful one week, and Hoot Host takes 2 to 3 weeks for most sites. WebsiteSetup puts a freelance build at 4 to 8 weeks.
Can I edit a done-for-you website myself?
Usually, though each provider handles it differently. FreeWebGuy sites come with an AI builder for your own edits and the platform's 24/7 chat support. UENI's Website Launch plan includes 30 days of done-for-you edits, and Hoot Host may bill some updates at an hourly rate.
What should I ask a done-for-you provider before I sign up?
Ask what the second year costs, whether there is a contract or a setup fee, whose name the domain is in, who makes changes after launch, and what happens to the site if you stop paying. The guide to free website offers explains which answers should worry you.
Is a done-for-you website better than Wix?
Neither suits everyone. Wix gives you full control of the design, costs $17 a month or more billed yearly, and you build every page. A done-for-you site arrives finished: FreeWebGuy charges $0 to build and $15 a month once you approve it. See FreeWebGuy vs Wix for the full comparison.
Who builds a done-for-you website, a person or AI?
That depends on the provider, so ask before you sign up. At FreeWebGuy, AI handles the first draft for speed and a person checks every first version before you see it. You then review the preview yourself and ask for changes before anything goes live.
